Ears & Tails

dobeyI have 2 German Shorhaired Pointers, both with docked tails (surgical removal of the majority of the tail within the first few days of the puppy’s life). The tail docking occured before they came into my life and was done by their respective breeders. They both have long floppy ears though and were at least spared from having their ears cropped (not t0o common for GSP’s to have their ears cropped, but their tails docked- yes).  People have often asked me about these procedures, wondering if it’s something I specifically requested, performed myself, etc- and often with a look of disapproval.

I never really understood why it was necessary or desireable to perform things to these poor animals, but supposedly there are reasons out there. Well, “Banfield, The Pet Hospital, the nation’s largest network of animal hospitals, has announced it will no longer do tail docking, ear cropping or devocalization on dogs.” I read this story on USA Today, check it out here: Ears & Tails

Live Longer With Your Pet!Kitty

Pets make terrific additions to our lives and make us so incredibly happy! We cuddle with them, love them, pet them, throw ball, sticks and toys for them and spend countless amounts of dollars on trying to increase their level of happiness. And what do they do for us? Well, one thing is that they keep us alive longer!

Pets definitely reduce the amount of lonliness that we may feel, particularly those with low degress of social interation. They help to reduce stress and even cholesterol! Many studies indicate that hanging out with a pet can significantly reduces your blood pressure and suggests that people with heart trouble may benefit the most from this. Having a pet with inevitable keep you more active which will keep you in better shape and perhaps help with weight control.

As I listen to myself write, I started thinking about how I’ve always had at least one pet. At that rate I may live forever- just kidding. But the truth is that I feel that my life is so much better for having shared it with pets. I get a lot of joy from playing with my dogs, watching them sleep, picking out fun toys for them at the store, making them new homade treats, etc. Even if I didn’t actually live longer because I have them, I’m pretty sure I live better. As always, I would love to hear your thought so don’t be shy with sharing them. If you are interested in reading some more regarding this topic here’s a link where you can start ;)

Wooden Leg Goats

Wooden Leg Goats

OK, so apparently I’m really late to arrive at the fainting goats awareness party. “Fainting Goats”, “Myotonic Goats”, “Wooden-Leg Goats”, “Tennessee Scare Goats”, whatever you choose to call them I had no idea these cute goats existed until my buddy Mike posted a link to this video (seen below). These particular goats are a unique breed with a hereditary disorder that stiffens their muscles when they are excited or startled causing them to “faint”. Well, they never actually faint, but it sure looks like it. Take a peek, I’m sure you’ll find it as interesting as I did. Now, I kind of wish I had one of these goats… I would name her Freckles I think… for no good reason ;)

Something About Vick

Posted in Dog, Oregon, Pets, Portland, pet sitting on July 24th, 2009 by Bark – Be the first to comment

Welcome to BarkSpot from Bark PDX, a blog dedicated to our pets and our lives and adventures with them. Here we will share ideas, information, news, links, fun stories, anecdotes and basically everything pet related.

Something About Vick

Michael Vick, a former NFL super-talent (if you like QB’s that run alot and can’t pass so well) and the U.S.’s most egregiously injuredPitbad dog murderer has been released from prison. Vick was imprisoned for 1 year and 8 months for his role in the organization and operation of a multi-state dog fighting ring that left many dogs either dead or badly injured. This is another moment when I wish animals could speak and could have testified against Vick in an attempt to increase his sentence. Anyway, Vick is set to speak next week and address the public regarding the inhumane treatment to animals (or he’ll hire some writers to help him say the right thing). I can only hope that he’s learned something at the expense of all those poor, victimized animals that suffered as a result of his sick, twisted and deadly hobby. I would love to hear your thoughts about Vick, his inhumane treatment to animals and whether or not you believe he should be reinstated to the NFL.

Gidget the Taco Bell Dog

As many of you most likely have heard, Gidget the Taco Bell Dog died the other day. She wasn’t honest about actually being a female or that she couldn’t actually speak Spanish, but she warmed our hearts just the same. Here’s a little clip from Conan O’Brien’s The Tonight Show remembering Gidget for you to enjoy. R.I.P. Gidget!!

Cat Got Your Tongue… or More?

Cat Got Your Tongue… or More?

tonguesWhen someone asks you if the cat has got your tongue, they want to know why you are not speaking when they think you should. If this cat is available, I’m looking to hire someone with this very unique skill set. As much as I’m aware of this commonly used idiom, I admit that I have no idea where it comes froms from. Curiosity killed the cat, that much we know, but in spite of that I thought I’d look into it a bit. What seems to be agreed upon with respect to the origin of “cat got your tongue”, is that nobody agrees where it comes from. If you do a little research you will find countless stories and explanations that only further convolute the truth of the phrase’s origin. Here is a link that shares a few interesting theories and I would love to hear your ideas or review any interesting links that might point me in the right direction.  Cat Got Your Tongue Theories

No Bull About It

Posted in Cat, Dog, Oregon, Pets, Portland, dog walking, pet sitting on July 9th, 2009 by Bark – Be the first to comment

Welcome to BarkSpot from Bark PDX, a blog dedicated to our pets and our lives and adventures with them. Here we will share ideas, information, news, links, fun stories, anecdotes and basically everything pet related.

No Bull About It

My Uncle is a cattle farmer and he takes a pretty compassionate approach to caring for his herd. He names the cows, knows their Bullsdifferent personalities, and truly cares for them in a way that makes it more difficult when having to part with them. After all, he needs to make a living and this means parting with them from time to time. I was thinking about being on his farm, watching his cattle graze and live so peacefully when I was watching some footage of the “Running of the Bulls” today. None of my Uncle’s cattle seem to exhibit the same fierce and angry intensity than that of the bulls running through the streets of Spain. But then again, they don’t have to navigate through crowded streets of screaming people beating them with sticks and pulling on their tails only to end up in an arena where they will be stabbed repeatedly until inevitably finding a slow and painful death.

My uncles cows, when they leave his farm, are most likely not going to like where they’re going either, but most people don’t die in the transaction. Today in Pamplona, Spain, a 27 year old man was pierced in the neck and lung by a bull’s horn resulting in his death. This is the 15th time that someone has died via bull goring since they started recording these statistics in 1924. I won’t post the video of the goring on the blog because I don’t always know who is coming to visit. Though, I’m sure you can find it pretty easily on your own if you do a little surfing. Anyway, thanks as always for reading and I will look forward to hearing your thoughts regarding the “Running of the Bulls”.

Skinny Fish

Welcome to BarkSpot from Bark PDX, a blog dedicated to our pets and our lives and adventures with them. Here we will share ideas, information, news, links, fun stories, anecdotes and basically everything pet related.

Skinny Fish

There are times that I am completely desensitized when reading and internalizing strange information, today was not one of those days. Everyone who knows me knows that I’m not the biggest fan of feet so needless to say this story really disgusted me. And of course, I thought I would share it with you. Apparently some people think that having toothless fish eat the dead skin off of your feet is a good idea. Frankly, it horrifies me and it’s hard to believe that anyone could have conceived such a procedure much less subscribe to it. I mean, how many other feet have these fish eaten? And I’m sure that some of these feet were probably not in the best shape. I’m getting grossed out just thinking about all of the ways that this concept is totally hideous. Thankfully, some states have prohibited this unique fish delicacy, ugh, but not without some struggle. If the above video from CNN isn’t enough to wet your appetite, here’s the link to a story to someone who wants to take this to court. Enjoy!  Hungry Fish

Dogs, Grapes and Raisins…

Posted in Cat, Dog, Oregon, Pets, Portland, dog walking, pet sitting on July 7th, 2009 by Bark – Be the first to comment

Welcome to BarkSpot from Bark PDX, a blog dedicated to our pets and our lives and adventures with them. Here we will share ideas, information, news, links, fun stories, anecdotes and basically everything pet related.

Dogs, Grapes and Raisins…

grapesDogs like to get their mouths around most things and we like to give them things to put in their mouths. As I may have mentioned in an earlier post, my Mother is in town and every time I arrive at the kitchen, treats in one form or another are being distributed to my dogs despite specifically asking her to curb her generosity with them in this form. I don’t give my dogs any table scraps or anything like that at all. They are more than happy eating their own dry, crunchy food with the occasional dry, crunchy treat or piece of ice. If you think depriving dogs of human food is cruel, you should review some of the dental work necessitated by dog’s being spoiled  by their owners.

Now, we’ve heard about certain things being harmful or poisonous to dogs like certain plants, chocolate, chicken bones and nuts, etc. but what about grapes and raisins? As it turns out, raisins and grapes can be potentially fatal to your dog. I used to give my dog Daisy grapes and she seemed to like them quite a bit until a veterinarian friend of mind warned me against it. According to the ASPCA Poison Control Center grapes and raisins are most certainly unhealthy and not advised to give to your dog. As usual, I leave it up to you to do your own research and please feel free to share your findings here.  Enjoy:  ASPCA Grapes and Raisins
